New Compliance Requirements for Business Messaging

In order to help combat text messaging spam, North American mobile carriers now require registration to identify who is sending messages and the nature of the messages being sent to their wireless subscribers. 

Everyone who sends SMS text or MMS messages to wireless phone numbers must register with The Campaign Registry (TCR), the information hub that works with carriers, messaging companies and industry partners to establish common standards for A2P 10DLC messaging. 

What is A2P 10DLC?

A2P 10DLC stands for Application-to-Person 10 Digit Long Code. A relatively new messaging framework, it was introduced in 2021 by the mobile industry to address issues related to spam and fraud in SMS + MMS messaging.

A2P 10DLC addresses this problem by assigning a unique 10-digit phone number to each business, ensuring that messages come from a verified source. This system also includes additional security measures and compliance requirements, such as registration and vetting, to ensure that messages are legitimate and comply with industry regulations.

What information will I need to apply?

Make sure to have the following business information on hand when you start your registration: 

  • Legal entity registered name
  • Mailing address 
  • Tax ID (EIN / TIN)
  • Information about your online presence, like a website or publicly accessible social media page 
  • A functioning contact email address—in case the registry needs to contact you about your SMS use
  • At least three examples of typical text messages to/ from your account
